Essay on “Memoirs of a Woman Doctor” by Nawal El Saadawi

Order type: Essay
Subject: Creative writing

You will write an essay which shows, through close exploration of Saadawi’s pages, the patterns which reveal the woman doctor’s ten-year process of redefining how she sees herself and her profession. To make your case, you will cite selected passages–a minimum of two–and then show what they reveal about the main character and how they link to other passages in the novel. Don’t just quote Saadawi and assume the importance of her words is self-evident.
You have to write about whatever you quote in a way that shows readers how the words from Memoirs bear upon your claim about the changes in the nameless main character’s emerging redefinition of who she is, what her vocation is, what it means to be a physician. Your claim about the main character is your thesis, and must take into account the whole novel (not just the first half).

AUDIENCE
Assume your reader is Head of the Hiring Committee at a firm where you’ve recently put in an application for a job you really want. This man or woman has your CV, plus the other things that go into a job application. Yet, to get an added sense of applicants’ promise as employees, the Head has asked finalists to send a clean copy of an essay written for one of their core courses. The essay, according to the Head, should demonstrate a finalist’s ability to analyse ideas and their written presentation—and should communicate that analysis in clear direct prose. The essay you will send to the Head is the essay you are about to write.
Remember, the Head is a stranger and knows nothing about your subject. But if your essay connects with—engages or “relates to” him or her—then you’re writing for a general audience.
