Music and Culture: Race, Power, and Appropriation

Music and Culture: Race, Power, and Appropriation
In every class students are to submit a one page reflection on the topics covered in the previous class. Rather than simply re-iterating the subject matter, reflection papers should demonstrate a critical approach. (For example: What is the significance of the thing(s) discussed/why did we discuss them? What questions are we left with? Does the subject matter relate to anything outside of the class? Etc.) Take a moment to think about what was discussed and what it means in a broader context. You may write informally for this assignment.

Music-Essay

Order Description

Watch a fictionalized (not documentary) movie about rock history about a genre, artist, or time period we?ve covered already in class.

This is the movie I choose: "Beyond the Sea; De-Lovely; Rat Pack (after covering Tin Pan Alley)" –

Please read this carefully : ( Please include the time location in the essay when you analyze something in the movie – that’s very improtant ).
What to write about: Write a clearly organized analysis of the film, noting how it pertains to the music and historical-cultural context we?ve discussed in class. I will be looking for the following components:
1) Basic identifying information (the title; the genre, artist, and/or era of rock history it deals with; and the director) and a brief synopsis of the plot.
2) Critically assess at least one scene from the film that depicts a
live performance of the music we?ve studied. Use class vocabulary to describe the music and analyze if the film has portrayed it accurately (for instance, using correct instruments, rhythms, forms, etc.). Include the time location (i.e. ?From 47-52 minutes into the film??).
3) Critically assess at least one scene that depicts the cultural-historical context of the music. Use material you?ve learned from class to analyze whether or not the film accurately portrays the role of music in that cultural and historical context.
Include the time location of this scene too.

Grading Rubric:
1-5 Identifying Details: Film?s title, subject, director, and brief synopsis.
1-20 Musical Analysis: Description of the portrayal of music in the film, and critical assessment of its accuracy based on class material. Include the time location of the scene.
1-20 Contextual Analysis: Description of the portrayal of the cultural-historical context of the music in the film, and critical assessment of its accuracy based on class material. Include time location.
1-5 Organization and Writing: The descriptions and analyses should be clearly organized. There should be a quick wrap-up concluding thought. Your writing should be clear, lacking in grammatical mistakes, incomplete sentences, run-ons, or spelling errors. Proofread. Follow formatting guidelines.

EDAE400 TRIMESTER 1 2013 Assignment 1 – Music Education-Term paper

Order Description

Assignment 1 – Music Education

Total word count for both tasks is 1,350 words (but you will not be penalised if you exceed this).

1) Key curriculum elements. (35% of music mark)
The key elements for the music curriculum are singing, playing instruments, moving, composing and listening. Write about one page (approx 350- 400 words) that outlines why you think teaching these key elements is important both for developing music skills and knowledge and contributing to education more broadly.

What you would hope to achieve in the classroom and what potential difficulties you might expect? (Provide us with a solution!)
Give us your own personal ideas rather than quotations from curriculum documents.

Assessment will be based on expressing main issues; having imaginative but realistic ideas; recognition of the classroom context.

2) Integrating Music into the Curriculum (50% of music mark).
Choose THREE HSIE existing units of work (each from a different stage level) (see attached HSIE Board of Studies Booklet- use units from stage 1,2 &3 please)
For each,
1) Briefly outline musical activities (TWO different types) that would relate to the unit or area. Provide as much detail as possible (eg names of songs, etc.) (approx 350 words)

2) Provide one lesson plan for one of the musical activities taught in each unit (ie three lessons plans all up). You only need to include the music part of the lesson and this could be quite short, eg a 10 minute exercise. For the lesson plans I am interested in learning what you plan to do with the children. Use a format that works for you and don’t be too hung up on bureaucratic jargon.
The point of this exercise is for you to think about how music can be integrated into other curriculum areas. Be imaginative about how you can learn songs or listen to music that relates to the HSIE unit or create soundscapes or music/movement activities. (approx 650 words)

Assessment is based on both the quality and originality of ideas and the clear expression of them in your outline and lesson plans. Try to include different types of activity – e.g. I don’t want three lesson plans for songs, even if you do identify a song for each unit (which is quite possible).

Assessment criteria:
Demonstration of importance of each musical element to music and general education.
HD: Good discussion of each musical element with several arguments.
P: Sketchy discussion with only one argument per element.
F: Incomplete coverage with poor or absent arguments.

Creative ideas for implementation.
HD: Imaginative use of music and use of several different approaches or types of activities.
P: Predictable use of music and/or only using one type of activity.
F: Incomplete.

Realistic recognition of potential problems.
HD: Identification of realistic problems and possible solutions
P: identifying unrealistic problems or ignoring obvious ones.
F: Incomplete or absent.

Creative ideas for links to HSIE units.
HD: Imaginative ideas that enhance the other KLA unit.
P: Ideas that are a bit irrelevant or tangential or boring.
F: Incomplete.

Clear expression of teaching procedure in lesson plans.
HD: Good structure of lesson with realistic activities and contingencies.
P: Poor lesson structure and dull content
F: Poorly thought out and impractical lesson structure and content.

Inclusion of sufficient details of materials and resources.
HD: All materials and resoucres included
P: Incomplete list of resources.
F: No resources listed.
