A. Attention Getter- The narrator of this story is a high school teacher with a drug addicted brother who is in jail.

B. Background Information- the narrator cared for his brother and he wanted him by his side when his daughter died.

C. Thesis Statement- By the time the story ends the narrator and his brother had the capability of forming a good brotherly relationship that they could not have formed at the beginning.

II. Symbolism
A. Blues and jazz music is used to symbolize different things for different characters. The narrator associates it with drugs while Sonny associates it with a good things in his life.

B. Ice symbolizes dread, fear and the feeling of being shocked.

C. Light symbolizes telling a secret like the narrator’s mother did and good things happening to the characters.

III. Point-of-View
A. The story is told from the point of view of Sonny’s brother who is complete opposite of Sonny.

B. His point of view on things differs from point of view of Sonny.

C. The narrator tells the story as he sees it and the story revolves around him.

IV. Setting
A. The setting of the story is in Harlem New York City.

B. Drugs are available and there are many drug addicts.

C. The setting is in 1950s when blues and jazz music genres were associated with drugs.

V. Character
A. Sonny is a character who goes through many struggles while trying to stop using drugs. Readers may sympathize with him while other may be angry with him for drug abuse.

B. the narrator tells the story of Sonny from his perspective thereby giving the reader another way of looking at sonny and his agonies.

C. Creole is another significant character in this story since he is the one who helps Sonny change his own future.

VI. Conclusion
A. By the time, the story ends the narrator and his brother had the capability of forming a good brotherly relationship that they could not have formed at the beginning. The story is able to give the readers hope that people can change.

B. This story shows that people should accept and support each other even when they have different strengths.
